Ann Arbor, Mich. - The University of Michigan School of Dentistry is rated as the top dental school in the United States for the sixth consecutive year by an international publication that rates universities.
The 2020 QS World University Rankings also lists U-M as the third best dental school in the world, up from fifth place last year.
QS analyzes information from 4,700 institutions around the world and publishes overall university rankings, as well as rankings for 48 disciplines, including dentistry, to help prospective students identify the world’s leading schools. For the specialty rankings including dentistry, an international survey of 95,000 academics worldwide rate in these areas:
- The academic reputation of universities.
- The opinion of employers in terms of which institution’s graduates they are most likely to employ.
- Research citations by paper from Scopus over a five-year period.
- A method called the “h-index” that measures the productivity and impact of the published work of a scientist or scholar, or a group, such as a department or a university.
“Rankings like the annual QS survey validate the high standards and commitment to excellence that our faculty, staff and students bring to their academic work and scientific investigations,” said Dean Laurie McCauley. “From its early days, the school has broken ground with innovative and important research vital to understanding oral health and, thus, advancing overall health. We strive for our students to have that strong scientific foundation to support their clinical training, so we’re pleased that this latest ranking acknowledges the strength of our programs and research.”
Worldwide, the top two dental schools above U-M were No. 1 King’s College London, Great Britain, and No. 2 Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam, Netherlands. The next highest U.S. dental schools after U-M at No. 3 were Harvard University at No. 5, the University of California-San Francisco at No. 9 and the University of Washington at No. 12.
The rankings are a publication of the British Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Company. More information and the list of the top dental schools in the world can be found on the QS website.
The QS ranking is one of the two leading international university rankings published each year. The other, the Shanghai Rankings, most recently released in June 2019, rated the U-M dental school No. 1 in the world in Dentistry and Oral Sciences.
