The school’s four-year, $140 million construction and renovation project continues to make progress. While the project was temporarily shut down this spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic, progress since last fall has been steady and consistent. Highlights include:

  • In late December, the new Faculty Commons opened. This area, formerly the school’s library and then later student study space, has been renovated as offices and a faculty collaboration area.
  • The school’s new North Entrance was opened in January. Patients and visitors can now enter and access the Dental Building via the new entrance from the Plaza Level of the Fletcher Street Parking Structure. Guest Services staff at the entrance assist patients and visitors with wayfinding and now with health screening checks.

  • The structural portion of the courtyard addition was completed in March. The school celebrated with a beam-signing party. Many members of the school community joining Granger, the construction management team, for coffee and cookies while they signed a steel beam that will be a permanent part of the courtyard addition. The beam was installed a few days later.
  • Work continues on the first phase of clinic renovation starting with the former Green clinics. At the completion of this phase later this year, clinic space for Periodontics, the Delta Dental Integrated Special Care Clinic, the Bien-Air Patient Admitting and Emergency Services Clinic, and one part of the Victors (Predoctoral) Clinic will open.

Since construction resumed in May, the project team has been refining the timeline and working to make up time lost in the two-month suspension due to the pandemic. More about the renovation and addition is available on the School of Dentistry website at www.dent.umich.edu/blue-renew.
