Dental School Faculty Receive Award for Major Bioscience Initiative

Ann Arbor, Mich. - School of Dentistry faculty member Dr. David Kohn will lead a new research project that seeks to develop advanced materials that control the programming of cells and their spatio-temporal organization into functional three-dimensional tissues.

Kohn, a professor in the Department of Biologic and Materials Sciences & Prosthodontics and professor of biomedical engineering in the College of Engineering, is joined by co-principal investigators Dr. William Giannobile, the William K. and Mary Anne Najjar Professor of Dentistry and Chair of the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, and faculty from the College of Engineering and Medical School.

The project is part of the University of Michigan’s Biosciences Initiative, a major university-wide program to fund cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research among the biological sciences. The initiative is designed to coalesce regenerative medicine activities across campus and help establish Michigan as a preeminent institution in this area.

Kohn and Giannobile are co-leads for a major regenerative medicine research grant that was announced at the dental school in March 2017. The Michigan-Pittsburgh-Wyss Regenerative Medicine Resource Center is funded by an $11.7 million grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. The leadership team includes researchers from the University of Michigan, University of Pittsburgh and the Wyss Institute at Harvard University. The center brings together a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, clinicians, and regulatory and technology commercialization experts who shepherd regenerative medicine therapies developed by researchers from academic, private companies and non-profit organizations through the translational process towards clinical trial initiation.
