150 years of oral health at U-M
The University of Michigan has played a pioneering role in dental education, becoming the first state university in the world and the second in the United States to offer formal training in dentistry. Established in 1875, the College of Dental Surgery transformed dentistry from a craft into a science-based profession, thanks to the vision and efforts of the Michigan State Dental Society and influential figures like Dr. Jonathan Taft and Dr. John Watling. Over the years, the school has achieved global recognition for its rigorous curriculum, groundbreaking research, and contributions to public health. Today, the University of Michigan’s School of Dentistry remains at the forefront of dental education and innovation.
