The University of Michigan School of Dentistry
In my laboratory of Epithelial Biology, we investigate the function of key molecular signaling pathways and the contribution of stem cells to epithelial regeneration and diseases present in the skin and oral mucosa. My research focuses on answering critical clinical questions and problems related to the healing of oral mucosa and skin, in addition to studying epithelial malignancies, particularly head and neck cancer.

Dr. Squarize is an Associate Professor with tenure and Principal Investigator of the Epithelial Biology Lab at the UM. She earned a DDS, followed by a Master’s degree and PhD in Oral Pathology. She won the prestigious Edward Hatton Award from the International Association for Dental Research for her head and neck cancer research. Before joining the University of Michigan in 2010, she completed her training and service on surgical and experimental pathology, followed by a five years fellowship at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, focusing on Stem Cell Biology and Epithelial Biology, as well as Oral and Pharyngeal Cancer. Dr. Squarize is also a member of the Michigan Medicine Rogel Cancer Center and the Division Leader on the UM SoD Global Initiative.
Dr. Squarize established national and international collaborations to advance science and has mentored students from diverse backgrounds. The students in her laboratory are from many academic majors, including chemistry, biology, pharmacy, dentistry, medicine, computational science, among others. This interdisciplinary group of students and professionals works together towards the identification of solutions and novel treatments for epithelial cancers, and the promotion of regeneration of mucosa and skin.
We are determined to understand the function of the key signaling molecules and stem cells in epithelial regeneration and disease.
Our research uses cutting edge technology, combined with the use of in vitro studies and preclinical in vivo models, to solve critical clinical questions and problems related to healing of the oral mucosa and skin, as well as epithelial cancer progression and resistance to therapy.
