From February 23 to March 11 of 2018, seven third year dental students (Alan Faber, Ethan Kolderman, Harjot Sandhu, Kelsie Pittel, Megan Utter, Min Oh, Rachael Vernon), three dental hygiene students (Katrina Lovett, Riitta Niemela, Harneet Braich), and Dr. Carlos Gonzalez-Cabezas, faculty of the School of Dentistry and Director of the Global Initiatives program, visited Meru, Kenya, to continue the implementation of a preventive/early intervention program at elementary schools. Working with local health workers, community members and teachers, about 2,000 children without access to care were screened by the group and received education in oral health and hygiene. Children with active dental caries received additional preventive/early intervention treatments. Additionally, they trained teachers in how to recognize abscesses in the oral cavity and refer the children to local hospitals and participated in clinical research workshop for local health care providers organized by group from UM medical school. Lastly, during the weekend they were able to go to a waterfall and to do a Safari at one of the premier parks in the world, Samburu. It was a fantastic way to spend the Spring Break!
