Fall & Winter 2012 FOR ALUMNI & FRIENDS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY The CDC celebrates 30 years of service! Faculty Profile: Dr. Carol Anne Murdoch-Kinch Alumnus Profile: Dr. Don Wurtzel White Coat Ceremony Janet Kinney New DH Director Dear Friends, DEAN’S MESSAGE There are many wonderful perks and privileges to holding the title of Dean. I’ve had the opportunity to serve as a university ambassador all across this beautiful state, throughout the U.S. and around the world. There are special memories associated with each experience: alumni and friends of dentistry I have gotten to know, colleagues in other dental schools I have had the pleasure to work with and dignitaries in countries near and far whose acquaintance furthers a shared vision to enhance health care for all. And then there are those unexpected moments; moments when something crosses my desk that gives me cause to smile and allows me to do something outside the day to day routine. That happened the day I received a letter from Geoffrey Green. The letter read; I wrote Geoffrey back and included several “Michigan” items along with two tickets to the Michigan vs Illinois football game that, coincidentially, fell on his 9th birthday. He and his father attended the game and had a great time. It isn’t every day the dean is able to generate this kind of smile and gratitude, but it was certainly wonderful to make a dream come true for Geoffrey Green. Ashley St.) was built in 1981 with funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The Center began as a cooperative venture between U-M and the city of Ann Arbor. Treating More Patients Fall & Winter 2012 The number of patients seeking care at the Center has increased significantly in recent years. Nearly 2,100 individual patients were treated last year, an increase of nearly 14 percent from 2010, and nearly 40 percent since 2008. 1 Community Dental Center provides patients with a full range of services including cleanings, ex- tractions, crowns and bridge work, and implants, plus oral health care education. Generally, patients are seen by appointment only. However, emergency care can be provided, when needed, depend- ing on the number of patients being treated on any given day. One patient, Terri Griffon said she was introduced to the Community Dental Center by her husband, Nicholas Wilcox, “who’s been going there for years because he likes the care he receives.” Griffon said she and her husband, both blind, “are always treated as normal adults, not as children. The dentists take time to explain the work they will do and do their best to put your mind at ease.” Compassionate care was impor- tant to another patient, Charlotte Payne, who had some broken teeth fixed after she fell on a sidewalk while walking her dog. “I was at the Center four times,” she said. “My teeth were pulled, replaced, repaired, and color matched perfectly. The work the dentists did was excellent.” Assisting Neighbors are Dr. Anne Bibik (DDS 1989), dental hygienist Darlene Jones, and a staff of six. Faculty and students from the School of Dentistry are also involved. Bibik, who has been at the Center for 14 years, says working at the Center has been “very rewarding. I leave the office every day knowing I have helped someone whose options for receiving oral health care were very limited, or perhaps nonexistent. But the nicest compliment,” she adds, “is when an existing patient refers a new patient to us, which happens frequently.” Dental Students, Faculty Involved School of Dentistry faculty and students are involved in helping the Center meet the growing demand for oral health care. Last summer, fourth-year dental Dr. Bonita Neighbors, director of the Community Dental Center. Photo by Per Kjeldsen Dr. Bonita Neighbors welcomes Margo Perry who worked as a dental hygienist in the original Model Cities Dental Center Building in 1982, the precursor to the CDC. students began providing care at the CDC as a part of the School’s Community-Based Dental Education program. Two days a week both third- and fourth-year dental students are at the Center providing restorative, surgical, and periodontal treat- ments as well as emergency care. Recently, second-year dental students also got involved. They observe how a dental office runs, participate in infection control procedures, review the health history and blood pressure of patients and take radiographs. Bibik agrees. “Because of their education and training, the third- and fourth-year dental students are able to hit the ground running when they come here to help us,” she says. “That’s a major benefit because care can be provided to more patients.” Both Neighbors and Bibik empha- size that any and all work a dental student does is closely monitored and reviewed before a patient’s treatment plan progresses. In addition, dental assisting students from Washtenaw Com- munity College are trained at the Clinic as are internal medicine residents from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital who observe and gain additional knowledge about the effects of oral health on systemic health. Dr. Philip Richards, clinical profes- sor of dentistry in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, provided care for patients at the Center for 18 years. Dr. Daniel Balbach (DDS 1961) a member of the Center’s Executive Board, says, “The Community Dental Center is able to help so many in Washtenaw County Mayor of Ann Arbor in the late 1970s, Louis Belcher helped secure funding for the Community Dental Center. On the left is CDC Director Dr. Bonita Neighbors. because it has the personnel, facilities, and equipment. Because of the state of the economy and the quality of care provided, the need for the Center will continue to grow in the years ahead.” While the Center looks to all sources for financial support – public, private, and grants – it’s community support and grants that enable patients with major financial challenges to receive the care they need. All assistance is welcome and the full amount of all donations is applied toward patient care and treatment. For more information about the Community Dental Center, visit: www.dent.umich.edu/cdc. 2012 Fall & Winter “I believe the Center’s goal and major achievement of ‘doing more with less’ is its greatest legacy,” Richards says. “The level of care that is available at the Community Dental Center to underserved and economically challenged patients is limited in the area.” Now devoting all his time and energy to teaching, Richards says helping at the Center one day a week for nearly two decades “significantly shaped my personal philosophy and career path in periodontics.” Photo by Per Kjeldsen Photo by Per Kjeldsen “I’m really pleased with the way dental students are able to step in and help out. They do everything we ask, and the patients are very receptive,” Neighbors said. 2 An “Illustrious” Career – Chris Jung Retires He was everywhere. When you read DentalUM, Chris Jung was there. When you read a flyer about a seminar or continuing dental education course, Chris Jung was there. When your eyes saw icons on the School’s Web site or digital signs at the School of Dentistry, Chris Jung was there. You may not have seen him face to face. But his work was always right there in front of you. Fall & Winter 2012 After a 31-year career as illustrator and designer at the School of Dentistry, Jung retired July 31. Much of his work appeared in print. But in recent years his work increasingly appeared in digital form as electronic media became ever more ubiquitous. 3 Including four years at the U-M Medical School before coming to the School of Dentistry in the fall of 1981, Jung was an illustrator or multimedia designer for 35 years… even longer when you consider his interest in illustration began in high school. help a local theater group or at the Humane Society. “But we won’t be moving,” he said. “It’s time to do something differ- ent,” he said. “My wife, Sandy, is retiring the same day I am,” he added, following her 36-year career as a physical therapist at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and Washtenaw Interme- diate School District. Looking back on his career, which also included teaching faculty and students how to effectively use PowerPoint and Photoshop, Jung said trying to convey the meaning of words into something visual that both gets attention and effectively communicates has always been a challenge, but a good one to have. Unsure about what exactly he might do with his newly- found free time, Jung said there will probably be some cross country trips he and Sandy will take to classic hotel lodges and trips to Europe. He may also volunteer to OPPORTUNITIES TO STRETCH “Every new project was an opportunity for me to stretch, to go beyond what I had done before,” he said. That process began by reviewing magazines, newspapers, Web sites, for example, to get the creative juices flowing. “Many times I started over before I felt I was ready to present my work to a client. And there were times when I had to go back to the drawing board, so to speak, after making a presentation. But it was all part of the process,” he added. “I think people today are more aware of how important design and illustration can be in effective com- munications, regardless if that work appears in print, on a Web site, or in a grant proposal,” he said. 3 8 Circadian rhythm 4 7 6 Blood vessel B,T cells Macrophage Endothelial cell Differentiation RBCs Vascular Niche igr M Bone marrow 5 at i Reticulocytes HSC Self-renewal on Hom in g Osteoblasts Stromal cell Adipocyte Ecological HSC Niche Osteoclast NOTABLE WORKS Some of Jung’s most conspicuous work is on the electronic screens on monitors throughout the School of Dentistry and along North University Avenue on lampposts where banners promote the Sindecuse Museum of Dentistry. He also designed the eye-catching poster that marked the beginning of the School of Dentistry’s partnership with Apple in the fall of 2005. Administrators, faculty, and staff praised Jung and lauded the quality of his work at a retirement celebration in July. Dr. Laurie McCauley, past chair of the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, best summed up the feelings of others when she said, “You brought life to scien- tific communications. Your illustra- tions have been a part of nearly every presentation I have given to students, clinicians, and scientists during the past 20 years. I routinely get highly positive comments about your illustrations.” Reflecting on his career, Jung said, “The variety here was incredible, working with students, faculty, deans, and others. The people I have worked with are not only passionate about dentistry, but also compassionate towards others. That’s probably going to be what I will miss the most.” Welcome Ken Rieger! It’s been nonstop for Ken Rieger since he became the School’s new multimedia designer in late July. “I’ve been working on a redesign of this magazine, the School’s Web site, and other projects,” he said. “It’s great.” A 1994 graduate of Eastern Michigan University, Rieger said, “Throughout my career, I have enjoyed using my graphic design abilities to help bring communicative messages to life. I welcome the opportunity to continue doing that here at the School of Dentistry.” 2012 Fall & Winter Before coming to U-M, Rieger was a senior graphic designer in Ann Arbor for Pall Corporation, a company that manufactures and markets filtration and purification products used worldwide by hospitals, biotechnology, phar- maceutical, food, beverage, and energy companies. At Pall, Rieger managed the Global Creative Services Department that developed visual media for all print material, trade shows, Web, and 3-D animation. 4 Clinical Instruction: How it Has Changed Members of the School of Dentistry’s Alumni Society Board of Governors learned more about changes to the predoctoral curriculum that have occurred during the past two years. At its spring meeting, they heard administrators and faculty describe some of the changes in clinical instruction. Launched two years ago, the revised curriculum gives students the opportunity to explore more career path options, enhances collaboration, and offers more exposure to scientific knowledge they will need when providing patient care. “Probably the biggest change is that the ‘lock step’ nature of dental education at Michigan is a thing of the past,” said Dr. Philip Richards, clinical professor of dentistry in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine. “Dental students now have flexibility with some of the courses they can take as they think about what their careers might be after graduation.” Dr. Stephen Stefanac, associate dean for Patient Services, told Board members that dental students are also getting into clinics earlier. “One of the most frequently asked questions by students is, ‘When do I get into clinics?’ We tell them it’s earlier than in the past, but that it’s part of a long-term process designed to build clinical competency.” He said students begin in the Foundation Clinic learning, for example, about how a dental office operates, how to prepare for patient visits, and proper instrument sterilization. They are assigned to patient families their second year. Other important changes have occurred in community-based dental education, evidence-based education, technology, and other areas. U-M CLINICAL INSTRUCTION – THEN VS. NOW Now Basic science knowledge and hand skill development often learned separately. Critical thinking activities used to consolidate knowledge and hand skills. Initial clinical experiences 5 Then Pre-clinic, didactic preparation Fall & Winter 2012 Focus Late in the second year working along with more advanced students in the clinics. Introduced to key patient care concepts as D1 students. Assignment of patient families Beginning of D3 year. Middle of D2 year. Community-Based Dental Education Limited community outreach opportunities. 10 weeks of community-based education in D4 year to increase clinical experiences. Also learn more about access to care issues. Evidence-Based Dentistry Isolated exposures, inconsistent clinical context. Consistent theme extending across the curriculum and into patient care. Technology Film-based radiographs; paper records; traditional impressions, prostheses. Digital imaging (2013); electronic health records; digital impressions; implants. Core Focus Not Changing Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. Carol Anne Murdoch- Kinch, assured Board members, “Our core focus is excellence in clinical dentistry. This has not changed, nor will it.” Board member, Dr. Metodi Pogoncheff (DDS 1976) said his three children who have been at the School of Dentistry have lauded the changes. “They tell me that their clinical skills are more advanced when they graduate from U-M than those of their colleagues who are graduates of other dental schools. That’s great to know,” he said. As the discussion ended, Dr. Wayne Olsen (DDS 1981) who chairs the Board, said, “Let’s keep raising the bar higher because that will benefit our students, who will become practitioners, and their patients.” Dr. Mark Fitzgerald, associate professor of dentistry in the Department of Cariology, Restor- ative Sciences, and Endodontics, assured Board members, “As alumni, you’re familiar with our School’s history of change. We have a high level of comfort with change. We have to keep changing because dentistry is changing. But our core mission will always be graduating dental students with excellent clinical skills.” Photo by Jerry Mastey Where Are They Now? RICHARD CHRISTIANSEN Dean, School of Dentistry, and Director, W.K. Kellogg Foundation Institute, 1982-1987 Even though he officially retired 10 years ago after nearly two decades at the University of Michigan, Dean Emeritus Dr. Richard Christiansen is staying active and having a good time doing so. From December to April, Chris- tiansen and his wife, Nancy, are in Arizona visiting their children, grandchildren, and friends. Other times during the year they travel to Florida and North Carolina to visit their other children and their families. “Our trips to different parts of the country are great opportunities for us to escape inclement weather during the winter as well as enjoy time relaxing with those who mean the most to us,” he said. When he’s in Ann Arbor, Christian- sen is at his School of Dentistry office several days a week and also meets with colleagues in the emeritus lounge. They discuss dental research, trends affecting the dental profession globally, or whatever is the topic of the day. He also participates in a monthly teleconference organized by the U.S. Public Health Service’s Dental Professional Advisory Committee, of which he is a member. Christiansen is also involved with Lutheran Social Services of Michigan. As the state’s largest private social services agency, it offers more than 70 programs that serve over 20,000 persons in 40 locations across the state’s Lower Peninsula that benefit children, families, senior adults, immigrants, and others in need. He chairs the Board of Directors of LSSM’s Sequoia Place, a senior adult com- munity in Ann Arbor that provides comfortable, affordable housing for those 62 and older. The Hall recoginized him with the National Collegiate Umpire Award for a lifetime of excellence in umpiring. 6 Faculty Profile Carol Anne Murdoch-Kinch, DDS, PhD Associate Dean for Academic Affairs At an early age, Carol Anne Murdoch-Kinch seemed to have a pretty good idea of what she wanted to do when she grew up. “It was the first dental professional office building east of Montreal,” she said. The building had five dental offices and a dental laboratory. Her father, Dr. Fred Murdoch, was a general dentist in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, a city of about 50,000. Her mother, Margaret, was a nurse educator. “Dad asked me to hand a pair of scissors to the mayor at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. It was quite a thrill for someone that young,” she said with a smile. Looking back, Murdoch-Kinch’s ultimate decision to become a dentist and an educator was probably made when she was six years old. That was when her father asked her to play a special role when he opened his new office building in 1967. Dr. Murdoch’s dental office was a short walk from his daughter’s elementary school. “Instead of going straight home when classes ended, I walked to his office and waited for him and also watched him work,” Murdoch-Kinch said. STRONG ROLE MODELS “His example had a profound influence on me then and remains with me today,” Murdoch-Kinch said. “Seeing how he communicated and empathized with his patients and the kindness I always heard in his voice are qualities I not only try to display myself but also pass along to dental students here at Michigan.” Her mother, Margaret, was a nursing educator and executive director of the New Brunswick Lung Associa- tion. “As a working mother with a demanding career, she balanced work and family exceptionally well and was one of my most important role models,” Murdoch- Kinch said. Fall & Winter 2012 As an undergraduate student at the University of New Brunswick, Murdoch-Kinch continued working for her father during the summer and later as a dental student at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. A biology major, she changed the focus of her education after two years when she was accepted into dental school. 7 After earning her dental degree in 1985, Murdoch- Kinch ran her own dental practice for four years. “I loved treating and helping patients, but wanted another challenge,” she said. During the years she ran the practice, three significant events occurred that transformed Murdoch-Kinch’s life. Dr. Carol Anne Murdoch-Kinch Photo by Per Kjeldsen Photo by Per Kjeldsen The move from Canada to Indianapolis was “a big one for us,” Murdoch-Kinch said. She sold her practice. Her husband gave up his job and found another in financial services. “We left our large extended families and missed many important events because we were so far away,” she said. Dr. Murdoch Kinch works closely with her staff, including administrative assistant Karri Grob, to manage 400 + students and a very complex curriculum. MAJOR MILESTONES In 1987, she became a part-time instructor in a dental assisting program in Nova Scotia and was also a part- time clinical instructor in oral diagnosis at Dalhousie University’s School of Dentistry. “I loved the challenge of teaching and it was a great fit with my interests and strengths,” she said. “I enjoyed sharing my clinical experiences and knowledge. Teaching and private practice experience helped me to connect with my students.” About the same time, she met John Kinch, a phar- maceutical salesman. The two were married in 1988. “That was one of my best decisions ever,” she said. “John has provided tremendous support and encour- agement which has allowed me to enjoy a successful and satisfying career as a working mother of three children. I could not have achieved any of this without his constant love and support.” THE ROAD TO MICHIGAN As she worked on her PhD, Murdoch-Kinch was ap- pointed associate clinical instructor in dental diagnostic sciences at I-U. Before receiving her doctorate in 1996, she accepted a position as assistant professor in the Department of Diagnostic and Surgical Sciences at the University of Detroit Mercy. During her six years at UDM she enjoyed working with many top-notch dental educators, including Virginia Merchant, who is now editor-in-chief of the Journal of the Michigan Dental Association. But Murdoch-Kinch also wanted an opportunity to develop her research and clinical expertise in oral medicine in a hospital setting. “When I learned the University of Michigan hospital dentistry program was searching for someone to teach oral medicine, I jumped at the chance,” she said. She hasn’t looked back. “I heard the U-M School of Dentistry was a great place to teach, practice dentistry, and conduct research, but I didn’t really know how great it was until I got here,” Murdoch-Kinch said. “I have been fortunate to have mentors like Sharon Brooks, George Taylor, Joe Helman, Lynn Johnson, Nisha D’Silva, and Marilyn Lantz who were always willing to help and offer encouragement.” During her second day at the School of Dentistry, Murdoch-Kinch was asked to serve on the School’s curriculum committee. Continued on page 9 2012 Fall & Winter The third event occurred in 1989 when the director of graduate diagnostic sciences at the Indiana University School of Dentistry in Indianapolis told Murdoch-Kinch about a new program. “Dr. Dale Miles already knew me and my interests and encouraged me to apply. I’m glad I did,” she said, “because I was accepted into his first class of residents.” In 1991, Murdoch-Kinch earned a certificate in dental diagnostic sciences (oral medicine and oral and maxil- lofacial radiology) and then began working on her doctorate focusing her clinical research on Crouzon Syndrome. The genetic disorder leads to premature fusion of skull and facial bones during development which ultimately results in craniofacial deformity, mal- occlusion, and vision and hearing loss if left untreated. 8 Faculty Profile (CONTINUED) health-related quality of life issues in cancer patients, and salivary bio- markers of head and neck cancer. Photo by Per Kjeldsen Murdoch-Kinch also treats patients with various oral mucosal and salivary gland disorders in the oral medicine clinic at the U-M Department of Hospital Dentistry while teaching dental and medical residents in an inter-professional practice setting. Teaching and patient care round out a very busy schedule. Over time, the group redesigned the biomedical sciences curriculum, launched the Standardized Patient Instructor Program, and established the Objectively Structured Clinical Examination, an annual examination of fourth- year dental students to assess their clinical reasoning skills. Fall & Winter 2012 She also collaborated with Dr. Lynn Johnson on a study that used a Web-based interactive patient case simulator to teach genetics to dental and dental hygiene students. Later, Murdoch-Kinch was co-leader of a team that developed the science foundation component of the redesigned curriculum launched two years ago. 9 For the last seven years, she has been a member of the U-M Health System’s Comprehensive Cancer Center’s head and neck oncology program. There, she collaborates with Health System colleagues on clinical research projects related to salivary gland sparing techniques in head and neck radiotherapy, oral INTERCONNECTIONS Being a teacher, clinician, and researcher are all complementary careers, Murdoch-Kinch said. “As a clinician who ran my own practice and continues treating patients, I have credibility in the classroom because I can relate to what students are experiencing and offer advice based on those personal experiences,” she said. As a teacher, Murdoch-Kinch is focused on one goal. “I want all of our dental students to be great clinicians,” she said. “Patients today need a clinician who un- derstands science, dentistry, and medicine. They need a clinician who can evaluate information and then offer the best advice about a specific diagnosis, treatment options, and provide skilled clinical care,” she continued. “Above all, patients today need someone who cares about them and will be their advocate. If you can do that, then there is no limit to the impact you have on a person’s life.” Named associate dean for Academic Affairs in the summer of 2010, Murdoch-Kinch oversees the predoctoral curriculum, chairs the Curriculum Committee, is an ex-officio member of the Academic Review Boards and Multicultural Affairs Committee, and is respon- sible for the faculty and staff in the Office of Academic Affairs. “I love what I’m doing,” she said. “This job is exciting, challenging, and gives me countless opportuni- ties to connect with students, faculty and staff, and has broadened my horizons.” Asked what her parents thought about her successes, she said both her father and mother “talked about my career, its challenges, and its opportunities. Dad loved talking about dentistry even though he was retired. But he surprised me when he said he wished he could have been a teacher. I have reflect- ed on that comment many times,” Murdoch-Kinch said. “Looking back, that was his wonderful way of telling me ‘I’m proud of you and what you have accomplished’.” Executive Leadership Program Carol Anne Murdoch-Kinch is one of 54 women nationwide recently chosen to participate in the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. The 12-month program is the only one in the U.S. dedicated to preparing women faculty for leadership positions at academic health centers. Awards & Recognition Fontana at White House to Receive Presidential Award Dr. Margherita Fontana, associate professor in the Depart- ment of Cariology, Restorative Sciences, and Endodontics, received the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on outstanding scientists and engineers in the early stages of their independent research careers during a ceremony at the White House July 31. Following the ceremony, Fontana said, “It was great. We each had an opportunity to shake hands and briefly speak with the president.” Fontana received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) for her studies on the prediction of caries risk for toddlers in underserved communities. She was one of three U-M researchers and among 96 nationwide to receive the award that recognizes scientists who are beginning their careers and show Nominated by the National Insti- tutes of Health, Fontana’s research focuses on oral health care inequities among underserved and minority preschool-aged children in the U.S., specifically related to dental caries. She is developing a tool that can be used in primary medical health care settings to identify children ages 1 to 4 with the highest risk of caries. The long-term goal is to reduce disparities by developing Photo by Sandy Schaeffer exceptional potential for continu- ing America’s leadership in science and engineering. Award recipients received a citation, plaque, and funding from their agency for up to five years to advance his or her research. Dr. Nisha D’Silva, professor in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, recently became the first North American recipient of a prestigious award for her work in oral pathology during a recent international conference in Brazil. D’Silva received the Rod Cawson Prize Lecture Award from the International Association of Oral Pathologists and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow which recognizes excel- lence in the science and practice of oral pathology. The award is presented to a researcher, clinician or scientist whose studies or clinical practice involves diag- nosing and managing oral and maxillofacial diseases. A pathologist who is involved in research, teaching, and clinical practice, D’Silva’s research focuses on mechanisms that promote oral cancer progression. They include identifying biomarkers that offer clues that can assist in the early detection of oral cancers, predict- ing which tumors will behave aggressively, and whether target- ing the biomarkers will inhibit tumor growth. Understanding these processes may one day lead to developing treatments that are unique for each patient. “I am honored to receive this award which adds to the recogni- tion of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry as an interna- tional leader in clinical practice and research in oral pathology,” D’Silva said. 2012 Fall & Winter Photo by Jerry Mastey D’Silva Receives Prestigious International Award 10 Awards & Recognition (CONTINUED) Kerschbaum is ADHA’s Educator of the Year Prof. Wendy Kerschbaum was named the Educator of the Year by the American Dental Hygien- ists’ Association. She received the award during the organization’s annual meeting this summer in Phoenix. Nominated by Anne Gwozdek, director of dental hygiene degree completion programs, Kerschbaum was described “as a champion of lifelong learning who leads by example” as an educator, mentor, and leader. As an educator, Kerschbaum was lauded for her “forward thinking” that led to the School’s dental hygiene program becoming a baccalaureate degree program in 1985, for helping to initiate an online degree-completion program in 2010, and using the success As “an exceptional mentor,” Gwozdek said Kerschbaum “has the keen ability to see something greater in others than they see in themselves. Her kindness and empathy are beacons that allow others to come to her easily for advice and guidance.” Gwozdek added that Kerschbaum’s “lead by example philosophy guides the program’s vision, but allows students and faculty to realize success as a team.” Saying she was honored and humbled to receive the award, Kerschbaum said she believes “teaching is foremost about touching lives in a positive fashion. Interprofessional Education Advancing at U-M Dentistry, Other Health Care Units Participating A new approach to educating students in dentistry, medicine, public health, nursing, pharmacy, social work, and other health care professions is starting to take shape at the University of Michigan. Since the beginning of the year, administrators and faculty with the School of Dentistry and other units on campus have been collaborat- ing on the new approach that encourages them to rethink the traditional “silo” method of educa- tion and patient care and, instead, develop programs that involve multiple health care disciplines. Leaders from five U-M schools and colleges recently participated in the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) Institute in Herndon, Virginia, to discuss these trends and how health profession educators can prepare future clinicians for team-based patient care. The U-M interprofessional team that attended included representatives from the Schools and Colleges of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Social Work. This group represented a larger working group from U-M that also includes representatives from Public Health and Kinesiology. demand by employers as a result of this collaborative approach.” She adds that interprofessional education “is also becoming an expectation of accrediting bodies of these professional schools.” Besides Murdoch-Kinch, other leaders from the five U-M schools and colleges who participated were: Bonnie Hagerty, associate dean and associate professor of nursing, School of Nursing. Maya Hammoud, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology and associate professor of medical education, Medical School. Michael Spencer, associate dean and professor of social work, School of Social Work. Bruce Mueller, associate dean for academic affairs and professor of pharmacy, College of Pharmacy. IPEC, a partnership of six profes- sional education associations, is working to advance interprofes- sional education that promotes comprehensive team-based patient-centered care. The six professional education associations that are IPEC members include the American Dental Education Association, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the American Associa- tion of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, the American Associa- tion of Colleges of Pharmacy, the Association of American Medical Colleges, and the Association of Schools of Public Health. 2012 Fall & Winter Dr. Carol Anne Murdoch-Kinch, associate dean for Academic Affairs and clinical professor of dentistry, says “interprofessional education and practice have improved patient care outcomes. Dentistry, Medicine, Engineering This NIH training grant is the glue that unites the research efforts of many at the School of Dentistry as well as the Medical School and the College of Engineering in the growing fields of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, says Dr. David Kohn as he discusses an important National Institutes of Health training grant that was recently renewed for the School of Dentistry. Kohn, a professor of dentistry and a professor of biomedical engineer- ing at the College of Engineering, is a co-principal investigator and director of the training program whose federal funding is designed to jump start the research careers of PhD students and post-docs working in the fields of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The other co-principal investigator is Dr. Paul Krebsbach, the Roy H. Roberts Professor of Dentistry, chair of the School of Dentistry’s Department of Biologic and Materials Sciences, and profes- sor of biomedical engineering. Five of the 17 trainees will be dual-degree DDS/PhD students from the School of Dentistry; seven will be PhD students from dentistry, medicine, and engineering; and five will be students pursuing post-doctoral training. Thirty mentors from the representative schools will supervise the trainees. A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE “By using these funds in a col- laborative endeavor at the three units at Michigan, we can bring together a large number of faculty and PhD or post-doctoral students who can work together more effectively,” Kohn says. “This will be a significant change since much of the work now being done is by individual investigators or small groups of investigators.” The collaborative effort, known as TEAM (Tissue Engineering at Michigan), will provide an inter- disciplinary research-intensive Fall & Winter 2012 When the $6 million, five-year training grant expires in 2017, Kohn says it will mark the 40th anniversary of the longest-funded training grant awarded by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. The training grant was initially awarded to the School of Dentistry in 1976. It is also is one of the two longest- standing training grants awarded to U-M. Photo by Jerry Mastey 15 Drs. David Kohn (left) and Paul Krebsbach review the application for the NIH research grant. environment for 17 trainees annually who wish to pursue careers in tissue engineering and regeneration with a focus on restoring oral-craniofacial tissues. The financial support for the TEAM effort will enable the trainees, who are just beginning their academic and research careers, to gather preliminary data that will not only lead to new discoveries, but also serve as a springboard for their individual careers and future funding. “The training grant is an all- encompassing initiative, from basic research to translational research and, ultimately, patient-based care. However, patient-based therapies that may emerge will probably be some time away,” Kohn says. “But we want to use the University’s strengths in basic science research, engineering materials and design, and clinical research to discover new ways to help patients whose tissues and organs have been lost or significantly damaged because of trauma, pathology, or congenital abnormalities.” Research will be conducted at the School of Dentistry, the Medical School, the College of Engineering, and the North Campus Research Center. Bone Marrow “Fertilizing” Why Some Cancers Spread Research at the U-M School of Dentistry may shed some light on why a common chemotherapy drug may, when introduced, enable cancer cells to grow more easily. Dr. Laurie McCauley the McCauley, William K. and Mary Anne Najjar Professor of Periodontics in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine and principal investigator of the study, noted that prostate and breast cancer often spread to bones. The study found that when the chemotherapy drug cyclophos- phamide is administered it can suppress certain bone marrow cells that help the immune system but also increases some harmful cells that encourage metastasis. The good news is that researchers were able to reverse the tumor- friendly effects of the drug by using a cell-communicating protein in the bone marrow, CCL2. McCauley said further research may eventu- ally lead to developing new drugs that prevent local cancers from spreading. To watch a video of Dr. McCauley describing her work visit http://bit.ly/bone-marrow-video IADR Recognizes Nör, Kohn Distinguished Scientist Awards Two School of Dentistry faculty members and researchers were recently honored for their work at the 89th Annual Session of the International Association for Dental Research in Iguacu Falls, Brazil. JACQUES NÖR Dr. Jacques Nör, the Donald Kerr professor of dentistry in the Department of Cariology, Restorative Sciences, and Endodontics, received IADR’s Distinguished Scientist Award in pulp biology and regeneration. Nör is also an associate editor of the IADR/AADR Journal of Dental Research and president of the IADR’s Pulp Biology and Regeneration Scientific Group. Dr. David Kohn received the Isaac Schour Memorial Award for outstanding scientific contributions in oral, dental, and craniofacial research. Kohn’s research focuses on understanding biomineralization and the dynamics of bone growth and adaptation. That research is attempting to understand the physical, chemical, and biological factors behind bone formation with the goal of mimicking them in a controlled manner in a laboratory or clinical setting. Kohn was also named a Fellow of the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering during the organization’s annual session held in Chengdu, China, in June. The group includes individuals and groups dedicated to advancing biomaterials, surgical implants, prosthetics, artificial organs, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. 2012 Fall & Winter Nör, who is also a professor of biomedical engineering at the College of Engineering and a professor of otolaryngology at the Medical School, conducts research that focuses on the biology of stem cells in head and neck cancer and in dental pulp tissue repair and regeneration. He recently discovered mechanisms where dental pulp stem cells differentiate in vascular endothelial cells which could have an important impact in the emerging field of regenerative endodontics. DAVID KOHN 16 Orthodontics Alumna Wins Hellman Research Award For the second time in as many years, a recent graduate of the U-M School of Dentistry’s ortho- dontics program has won the prestigious Milo Hellman Research Award from the American Ortho- dontics Association. The award recognizes the most meritorious research paper submitted by a resident in a graduate orthodontics program in the U.S. or Canada. Dr. Ashwini Joshi (DDS 2008, MS 2011), a practitioner in the Chicago area, won the award for her research that investigated the effect of IGF-1 injections into the jaw joints of rats to see if growth of the lower jaw was enhanced. IGF-1 is one of several growth factors that influence bone and cartilage growth. Conventional treatments for patients with small or asymmetrical lower jaws include the use of functional appliances whose results are unpredictable or orthognathic surgery. Joshi’s research suggests that injections of IFG-1 growth factor might be able to reliably enhance and control jaw growth. Joshi noted that practical applica- tions of the research in orthodontic patients with retrusive or small lower jaws, which cause poor align- ment of teeth and an increased overjet of the incisors, is probably years away. She added that IGF-1 has been extensively studied in medicine for promoting bone formation in osteoporosis, bone fractures, and growth retardation. Dental Student 1st NIH Research Scholars Program Fall & Winter 2012 Fourth-year dental student Robert Vander Broek is delaying his graduation plans for a year. But he doesn’t mind. 17 Vander Broek was one of 45 dental and medical students from around the country selected by the National Institutes of Health to participate in its new Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP). The year-long enrichment program provides mentored training to creative, research-oriented dental, medical, and veterinary students at the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland. In August, he joined other MRSP participants at NIH and began work on basic, clinical, and translational research projects in areas that match their personal interests and research goals. They are also attending courses, seminars, a structured lecture series, and clinical teaching rounds. At the end of the 12-month program, Vander Broek and colleagues will present the results of their research to the NIH community. Dr. Nisha D’Silva, associate professor of dentistry in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, said during the time Vander Broek worked in her laboratory, he investigated the clinical relevance of proteins that promote the progression of early cancers. “Due to his natural curios- ity, ability to understand and apply key concepts, and ask important critical questions, he’s an outstand- ing scientist in training.” Prior to beginning the program, Vander Broek said, “I’m looking forward to this great opportunity to collaborate with students from around the country and learn from leading researchers in their respec- tive fields.” The MRSP blends elements of two former highly successful programs – the NIH Clinical Research Training Program and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute/NIH Research Scholars Program. Patient Stem Cells Regrowing Craniofacial Tissues In the first human study of its kind, researchers found that using stem cells to re-grow craniofacial tissues — mainly bone — proved quicker, more effective and less invasive than traditional bone regeneration treatments. Patients either received experi- mental tissue repair cells or traditional guided bone regenera- tion therapy. The tissue repair cells, called ixmyelocel-T, are under development at Aastrom, a U-M spinout company. “In patients with jawbone deficien- cies who also have missing teeth, it is very difficult to replace the missing teeth so that they look and function naturally,” said Dr. Darnell Kaigler, principal investi- gator and assistant professor at the School of Dentistry. “This technol- ogy and approach could potentially be used to restore areas of bone loss so that missing teeth can be replaced with dental implants.” Dr. Darnell Kaigler The treatment is best suited for large defects such as those result- ing from trauma, diseases or birth defects, Kaigler said. These defects are very complex because they involve several different tissue types — bone, skin, gum tissue — and are very challenging to treat. The main advantage to the stem cell therapy is that it uses the patient’s own cells to regenerate tissues, rather than introducing man-made, foreign materials, Kaigler said. The results were promising. At six and 12 weeks following the experimental cell therapy treatment, patients in the study received dental implants. Patients who received tissue repair cells had greater bone density and quicker bone repair than those who received traditional guided bone regeneration therapy. In addition, the experimental group needed less secondary bone grafting when getting their implants. The cells used for the therapy were originally extracted from bone marrow taken from the patient’s hip. The bone marrow was processed using Aastrom’s proprietary system, which allows many different cells to grow, including stem cells. These stem cells were then placed in different areas of the mouth and jaw. Stem cell therapies are still probably 5-10 years away from being used regularly to treat oral and facial injuries and defects, Kaigler said. The next step is to perform more clinical trials that involve larger craniofacial defects in a larger number of patients. Your futures are exceedingly bright.” That upbeat message from Dr. Richard Valachovic, executive director of the American Dental Education Association, was delivered to U-M School of Dentistry graduates during commencement ceremonies May 4 at Hill Auditorium. Valachovic said the day was memorable for him because it was 35 years to the day that he graduated with his dental degree from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine. From his experiences, Valachovic told graduates, “I can tell you that you are not being given a degree, you have earned it and with a considerable amount of effort and discipline.” Fall & Winter 2012 REASONS FOR OPTIMISM 25 Valachovic said his confidence about dentistry’s future is based on several trends that have become more apparent in recent years. They include a growing interest among oral health care professionals and the public at large about the interrelationship between oral health and systemic health. Dr. Richard Valachovic addresses graduates. Photo by Per Kjeldsen He also cited “a massive expansion of procedures and techniques, many of which were discovered here at the University of Michigan” that will fuel demand for dental care in the future in areas that include esthetic dentistry, implants, new orthodontic treatments, improved oral surgical techniques, and tissue engineering. Despite these advances, however, Valachovic said that progress is not apparent to many outside of the dental profession, especially in Washington, D.C. “Nothing annoys me more,” he said, “than to hear someone ask ‘What do dentists do now that nobody has cavities anymore’?” Valachovic told graduates that his response to that question is, “Thank goodness that we don’t have to worry as much about caries as we once did, because we can concentrate on ways to sustain good oral health.” MAINTAINING A RESPECTED IMAGE Noting that dentistry is a rewarding profession, Valachovic said, “To whom much is given, much is expected.” Oral health care professionals, he added, “must constantly display competence, be lifelong learners, and serve as living role models for our patients, our children, and to those who may become future dentists and dental hygienists.” Valachovic thanked dental school faculty for their commitment to excellence and their dedication to “developing students into talented and skilled professionals.” Class of 2012 113 DDS degrees 40 Bachelor of Science degrees (Dental Hygiene) 25 Master’s degrees (Periodontics, Prosthodon- tics, Restorative Dentistry, Endodontics, Orthodon- tics, Pediatric Dentistry) 4 PhD degrees (Oral Health Sciences) Patel to Classmates, “We’re fortunate…” “We’re fortunate to have found our passion in dentistry,” Yoshita Patel told classmates in her farewell remarks. Reflecting on their achievement, Patel, who was president of her dental class during their four years of education, said, “to heal with our hands is a rare and precious gift.” Thanking family, friends, dental staff and faculty for their support and encouragement, Patel also presented a gift to each of her colleagues from the Student Council, a scarf bearing the U-M emblem and “Class of 2012.” To heal with our hands is a rare and precious gift. Paul Gibbons Award to Dr. Donald Heys Dr. Donald Heys Heys, professor of dentistry in the Depart- ment of Cariol- ogy, Restorative Sciences, and Endodontics, received the Paul Gibbons Award from graduating dental students. Referring to the plaque listing the names of previous recipients in the Student Forum he told graduates, “It’s an impressive list. I am humbled to join that group.” Heys advised graduates to “always practice and work with great integ- rity and learn something new every day because the world is changing and you need to keep pace.” He also urged graduates “to recognize the quality of effort in those you work with. We all appreciate the positive feedback of ‘thank you’ and ‘well done’,” he added. The Paul Gibbons Award is given to a faculty member that graduates consider the most influential during their time in the School’s predoctoral program. Gibbons was a nationally known expert in prosthetic dentistry and cleft palate treatment and surgery until his untimely death in 1964 at the age of 44. Outstanding Instructor Award to Janet Kinney Class president Emily Hill said Kinney “has always held us to the highest standards and has displayed passion for the personal success of each and every one of us.” Congratulating dental hygiene students for “facing your obstacles head on and achieving your goals,” Kinney urged them to remember the words of auto magnate Henry Ford who once said, “Obstacles are the frightening things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.” She advised them “to take those words of wisdom and always keep your eyes on your goals.” 2012 Fall & Winter The Dental Hygiene Class of 2012 presented the Outstanding Instructor Award to Janet Kinney, a clinical assistant professor of dentistry in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine. 26 Alumnus Profile Donald Wurtzel (DDS 1981) “I think some of my most reward- ing moments as a dentist are the times when I’m meeting with my daughter and son, about an hour before the office opens, to talk about the patients we will be seeing that day and discussing their treatment plans,” said Dr. Donald Wurtzel as he talked about his experiences running a practice with his daughter, Lindsey, and son, Benjamin, who earned their dental degrees from Michigan in 2009 and 2011, respectively. Fall & Winter 2012 “It’s enjoyable sitting with them and talking about dentistry, or sometimes life in general, in a 27 relaxed atmosphere, because once the day begins we’re pretty busy,” he added. Running an office with 16 employ- ees and 10 operatories in Ann Arbor, Wurtzel is pleased with the way his career has evolved since he first considered dentistry as a student at Delta Community College in Saginaw. MICHIGAN “A GREAT FIT” Growing up on a farm in Hemlock, Michigan, just west of Saginaw, Wurtzel said he enjoyed science and working with his hands. “But as the oldest son, I quickly learned that I did not want to work on a farm the rest of my life,” he said. A counselor’s insights and a suggestion to consider dentistry prompted Wurtzel to investigate the dental program at Michigan. “It turned out to be a great fit for me and pleased my father who was a big Michigan sports fan,” he said. The first in his family to attend college, Wurtzel recalled his days as a dental student, particularly Drs. Harvey Schield and Robert Lorey. Schield, a faculty member for 29 years, was director of the preclinic in the late 1970s and early 1980s and introduced dental students to the basic technics of restorative dentistry. “He was a very caring person who taught in a positive way,” Wurtzel said. “Rather than dwelling on a mistake you made, he focused instead on what you could do to improve the next time.” Lorey, whose teaching career at Michigan spanned 45 years, taught prosthodontics and also demonstrated dental photography techniques that could be used in a clinic. Many of his suggestions were included in more than 70 teaching videos he produced. Lorey was posthumously inducted into the School’s Hall of Honor in the fall of 2009. “Dr. Lorey was a remarkable man and an excellent dental instructor,” Wurtzel said. “I later had the pleasure of seeing some of his outstand- ing work in my patients.” Dr. Donald Wurtzel Photo by Jerry Mastey TECHNOLOGY IS ANOTHER NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE “I have kept abreast of advances in technology throughout my career,” Wurtzel said. “We use intraoral cameras, digital X-rays and other technologies because these help us as clinicians and also benefit our patients.” Photo by Jerry Mastey “A GREAT PROFESSION” Dr. Donald Wurtzel meets with his son, Dr. Benjamin Wurtzel and daughter, Dr. Lindsey Wurtzel, before the office opens to discuss the patients they will see and how they will treat them. After earning his dental degree in 1981, Wurtzel opened his Ann Arbor practice. “I always enjoyed carpentry and woodworking and finished the interior of the office myself,” he said. “Carpentry, woodworking, and dentistry are similar because you use your hands extensively, and it’s always reward- ing to see the results of your work.” WORKING WITH DAUGHTER, SON Asked about the professional and personal dynamics of having a son and daughter working with him, Wurtzel said, “it’s worked out well. I love mentoring my children and also learning from them. I thought once they joined the practice that I might be able to relax a little more, but it hasn’t worked out that way,” he said with a laugh. Wurtzel added he is impressed with the clinical skills of his daughter and son. “Fundamentally, their skills are sound,” he said. “What has really impressed me, however, is their knowledge of the dynamics between oral and systemic health. That wasn’t addressed as exten- sively when I was a dental student compared to now.” Asked if dentistry is still a good career choice for a young man or woman given changes in the economy and record levels of student debt, Wurtzel said, “I hope so. Expenses are increasing, the number of regulations is growing, and fees are not keeping up with costs to provide care. It will be a more challenging profession for students who earn dental degrees in the future,” he said. “But, overall, yes, dentistry is still a great profession. The ability to work with a patient and help them is unequaled, even after all these years.” 2012 Fall & Winter Wurtzel said he never pressured his daughter or son to pursue careers in dentistry when they were growing up. Although Lindsey occasionally worked in his office when she was in high school, Wurtzel said she initially thought about a career as a pediatrician before choosing dentistry. Ben decided to become a dentist when he was a student at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. Another son, Don, who graduated from U-M two years ago, has a career in residential real estate. Dentistry as a profession allowed me to be involved in my children’s sports and school activities, and I’m sure this may have influenced their career decisions. In addition to running a practice and being active in organized dentistry, Wurtzel is also a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board. The group of six School of Dentistry alumni meets several times a year with Dean Peter Polverini. “We’re a sounding board and offer our thoughts and opinions about issues that affect the School, such as the new curriculum,” Wurtzel said. “It’s a great opportunity to get additional insight about what’s going on at the dental school and to offer suggestions on ways we can use our knowledge and experiences to help today’s dental students.” 28 Alumni News Evelyn Lucas-Perry (DDS, MPH 2011) is the new director of Public Policy Research at the American Dental Education Association. She is responsible for conducting in-depth research and analysis of legislation and federal regulations which will affect academic dentistry and oral health care. She will work closely with the Advocacy and Government Relations staff. Edward Givens (DDS 2006) completed his residency in prosth- odontics in June at the University of North Carolina. He is relocating to San Diego, California where he will be stationed with the U.S. Navy for three years. Fall & Winter 2012 David White (DDS 2003), of Reno, Nevada, has received the ADA’s 2012 Golden Apple Award for Out- standing Leadership in Mentoring. He received the award during the organization’s New Dentist Confer- ence in June in Washington, D.C. 29 David Jacobson (DDS 1988), of Ann Arbor, Michigan, has retired following a 24-year career at the School of Dentistry. Director of the School’s Patient Admitting and Emergency Services (PAES) Clinic for 15 years, Jacobson said he enjoyed “interacting with dental students and thrived on the ex- temporaneous nature of the clinic and its richly teachable moments.” Jacobson, who is from a family of artists, continues to create stained glass and woodcraft and also performs musically. During this past year the University of Michigan began implementing a new alumni/donor database for tracking private support. As you can imagine, this is a huge data conversion project and system-wide implementation is still ongoing. Rest assured that everyone on campus remains committed to ensuring all donor records are accurate. We did not want to delay publication of our Honor Roll, as public recognition of our benefactors remains vitally important to all of us at the School of Dentistry. As always, thank you for your continued commitment to our School and for your patience as we complete this project. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Thalia Jaimez in our Office of Alumni Relations and Development at thaliaj@umich.edu or 734-763-3315.
